Size, Care, and Shrinkage Guide for Your New Gi

Here’s everything you need to know about your new Ground Fighter gi to ensure it looks and feels great for a LONG time.

Size Charts
We provide both actual measurements (pre-wash) and suggested fit ranges to help you understand the size information of our gis. Please note that every single body is different and the suggested fit range is only a suggestion. While we can’t guarantee that the suggested fit will be perfect for everyone, we do provide FREE returns and exchanges on unworn/unwashed gis within 90 days of purchase.

When you receive your gi, try it on to see how it fits. If either the jacket or pants are more than 3” longer than you want them to be, we suggest exchanging it for a smaller size.

Care instructions
We suggest you wash your gi before rolling in it. Wash separately the first time, and then with like colors after that. Don’t iron the prints/logos.

We always recommend washing your gi in cold water, low/medium spin, and low/normal soil level, and then air drying. Never tumble dry your gi unless you want it to shrink, and even then do so VERY carefully.

Washing your gi separately with as few chemicals as possible will ensure your gi lasts even longer. However we often wash ours with vinegar and/or Oxiclean to reduce body odor, and have never had any issues.

Shrinking your gi can be tricky. If you want to shrink your gi, take small steps at a time and pay careful attention. Here are some suggestions based on our experiences.

The first wash may shrink your gi anywhere from none at all to a couple of centimeters. For the least amount of shrinkage, wash it in cold and let it air dry.

If you still need to shrink it, you can wash it in warm and let it air dry.

If after that you still need to shrink it, by more than just a tad, you can wash it in warm water and tumble dry on low heat, but check it every few minutes so that it doesn’t shrink too much. The pants will shrink faster than the jacket, so be sure you’re checking them both. Do not dry for long periods of time or on high heat as it could possibly damage the collar.

Here are a couple of examples for you. I am 5’6” and 125 lbs, and I wear an A0. I washed my first gi in cold water, medium spin, and normal soil level, and then let it air dry. I didn’t notice any shrinkage when trying it on. When I measured again it had only shrank about a half centimeter in the jacket wingspan and body length, and a centimeter in the pants' length.

To test shrinkage, I washed my second gi in warm water, medium spin, and normal soil level, and then tumbled dry for 20 minutes on medium temperature (NOT RECOMMENDED) until it was mostly dry. When I measured afterward the jacket shrank about a centimeter in both the jacket wingspan and body length, and the pants shrank a centimeter in width and 3 centimeters in length.
